The other reason is to make the application database-transparent and, somewhere down the line,
switch to the cheaper alternative (MSSQL).

And the worst is that most of these developers only know - at most - a very simple SQL, but they can make a virtue out of it by calling it things like "highly portable" or "standard" SQL... for those that remember it's basically "dBase" style but with a SQL syntax. And yes, this normally has huge performance penalties. But normally people only notice in production and by then .... too late .
