Tim, currently, i would probably go with this scanner:

if you have unmounted slides and prints you need to scan, i would get a
decent flatbed in addition -

the Nikon 5000's were great scanners in their day, but quite slow compared
to what is around now. Decent flatbeds like the epsons (we use a v500
daily) have very good results, and include dedicated slide/film scanners in
the lid - the only downside is no auto feed, so for massive projects, it is
no good.

In terms of potential outsourcing, scanning the slides will be the easy
part - loading another 50 slides every 30 minutes, 45 minutes, or whatever
it ends up being is not to difficult. Labeling, organizing and filing all
the digital files will be a huge project with a very high impact on the end
usability of all the scanned files.

For instance, we file all digitized images with patient name, diagnosis,
treatment to the date of the image. Each visit date has a labeled folder,
each imaging modality has a labeled folder inside the date folder.

We looked at scanning on demand, but the storage, scanning quality and
delivery window we wanted ended up being more expensive than interns. We
want to ensure that the gorgeous gonio photo of the medulloepithelioma in
the 3 year old from 1974 is digitized press-ready, and also easily findable
when we search.

good luck!
