Hello there to all,

I'm a new member to this list, and just signed up this morning. I
also send the subscription address to a couple of friends, so that our
numbers will continue to grow.

The most amazing thing I discovered with my Optacon, when it was still
working, was about fonts, the myriad shapes of bullets, and more about
formatting in general, when I moved from DOS to Windows in the mid
1990's. I was fascinated, when picking at random in Office 95, print
bullet after bullet, just to see what would come out, *grin*

Only until I proofread my papers for school with the Optacon, did I
discover why it is that Arial font is so easy to read, both for
sighted people, and for Optacon users.

Though I was finished with complex math stuff by the time I'd
purchased my used Optacon, I was fascinated that I could actually look
at geometry diagrams in a book, and feel the angles and their
respective markings.

I think the weirdest thing I ever read with my Optacon, was a print
book used to teach braille to sighted students, and they had a lot of
simulated braille dots in there. How weird it was to sit there
reading braille dots in a print book! All I could think was, wow, is
this ironic, or what?

I was amazed to find that some of the braille fonts out there have all
six dots represented, with the raised ones filled in, and those that
aren't, hollow, or it can be represented as larger dots and smaller
dots. It was just really bizarre for sure.

Is this survey on the web somewhere? Maria posted the write up to the
VIP-Ewes list for those of us who knit and crochet, and that's how I
found out about this list.

Thank you very kindly, and let's hope that the Optacon will rise
again, as an incredibly useful tool alongside scanners and other
adaptive technology. I'm so bummed mine doesn't work anymore.

Buzzingly yours,
Tina E
