But increasingly I don't think they are making many 480p flat panels even at 24" or bigger. I suspect you will find it hard to find new 480 line models at that size less than 720p in a couple years except for legacy CRT's if there are any.

Thanks Tom, but this is not relevant to the point I was making. I agree that most panels will move to 720P or better, if they are not already using this sample density (or something like 768 lines).

The point is that we don't need that level of resolution on a display that is less than 30", and you will not see the extra detail on such a display. You do benefit somewhat from display oversampling.

Last night I was working late on the house we are remodeling and my client moved in his 55" LCD RPTV. He is still painting the living room, so he had to move the display away from the wall, closer to the couch. The viewing distance turned out to be about three picture heights. It was very uncomfortable to watch at this distance; you could just see the sample grid, and the perception of MPEG artifacts was much higher than on my 50" display at 5 picture heights. His display looks much better at about 8 -10 feet rather than 6.5 feet.

Ironically, my client mentioned that the display is not 1080P. ( I think it is about 1368 x 768). He did not know about the display scalability issue, only that he did not get the "Best." He was told by the salespeople that he should watch the 55" display from a distance of 8 feet.

Craig
