The networks are not threatening to shut down. They are threatening to take their chances with the subscription services that now deliver their content to about 85% of U.S. homes. By so doing, they can reap several financial windfalls: 1. Total control over advertising content - no revenue splits with local broadcast affiliates. 2. Total control of subscriber fees - no revenue splits with local affiliates. 3. The elimination of content "censorship" as practiced by OTA broadcasters and enforced by the FCC - this can make the network shows more competitive in terms of "content" with premium channels that are not censored. 4. The ability to enhance and solidify the duopoly of subscription TV and mobile access to the same content - the announcement yesterday that Dish Networks is trying to buy Sprint speaks far louder than threats in NAB speeches. Local broadcasters should be very concerned!
