All this is just corporate giants demanding a guarantee of sales before =
they will produce a new product.
Isn't there a federal law against such practices?

Subject: [opendtv] Re: Hearings :Cost of Converter Boxes

I watched the webcast of yesterdays hearing, and saw the LG =
representative=20
hold up a model of a converter box in the palm of his hand, stating =
that this=20
would need to be powered by a wall mounted power supply, and would cost =
~=20
$50.00 by 2006 if the government would set a hard date.
=20
It is also a matter of public record that on January 6, 2005, Richard K. =
=20
Templeton, President and CEO of Texas Instruments. Visited with the FCC =
and =20
stated his company could deliver a $30.00 converter box by=20
2006 if a firm date is set.
=20
I wonder what the real market competitive price of a converter box =
could be?

Re: Ex Parte Communication. MB Docket No. 03-15.
Dear Ms. Dortch:

Pursuant to Section 1.1206(b)(2) of the Commission=E2EUR(tm)s Rules, =
this is to =20
notify you that on January 6, 2005, Richard K. Templeton, President and =
CEO of =20
Texas Instruments (=E2EURoeTI=E2EUR=9D), Trisha Cunningham,
Director, Worldwide Communications of TI and Robert S. Koppel, =
Director,=20
Government Relations,Telecommunications Policy of TI met with =
Commissioner=20
Kathleen  Abernathy and Matt Brill,
Commissioner Abernathy=E2EUR(tm)s Senior Legal  Advisor.
During the meeting, TI urged the FCC to act this year to establish a =
firm=20
deadline for clearing the 700 MHz spectrum of analog TV services. TI =
emphasized=20
that the 700 MHz spectrum currently used by
analog broadcasters is extremely valuable for public safety services =
and for=20
broadband wirelessservices. TI further emphasized that establishing =
(and=20
publicizing) a firm deadline would acceleratethe adoption of digital =
TVs in the=20
United States. TI also noted that it estimates that the retail cost =
ofset-top=20
digital-to-analog  converter boxes would be $30 - $40 by year end 2006 =
=E2EUR" if a=20
firm deadline is established this year (thereby giving manufacturers a=20
compelling incentive to produce a high volume
of such boxes).Pursuant to the Commission=E2EUR(tm)s Rules, one copy of =
this notice=20
is being filed electronically with the Commission.

Sincerely,
Robert S. Koppel
