This most likely has much to do with the ways in which Florida has
grown in the past five decades. Much of the growth in our state has
occurred AFTER the growth of cable, especially the boom in retirement
communities in Central Florda - after South Florida got over
populated and became a hell hole...
The population has nearly doubled since 1980, and Central Florida has
been the fastest growing region over the decades since 1980.
Also keep in mind that the over 54 demographic group is not highly
coveted by advertisers - not even covered in the ratings data for
which I posted the link. The retirees tend to watch a lot of TV, and
make up a huge portion of the folks who still watch the Network
evening news. The median age for ALL of the network evening news
shows increased to 62.8 in 2009. Much of the recent success of CBS
has been related to its ability to capture the older demographics,
although they did fare better last year in the 18-34 demographic.
You live in a rather unique area where there is an appetite for a
wide range of programming related to international news. In most of
the rest of the country the main area of growth for OTA is with
Hispanic viewers. Univision is now the fifth largest broadcast
network behind the big four.
And then there is the other reality of Florida...
We have better weather and more things to do than wasting time
watching TV. The Villages has one of the highest percentages of golf
carts per capita in the country. And the bars open at 9 am.
