Without getting too political, I believe it has a great deal to do with a loss in credibility and confidence that the traditional media are actually reporting the news. Too often it seems these days that the media is in the business of "making the news..."

The media are 'solely' in the business of selling commercials and promoting their network programs. ABC's O&Os constantly promote 'Dancing with the Stars' and, when it was on, 'Lost' on their news shows.

How such promotions can now be classified as news is beyond me.

In 1969, WLCY-138 radio ran some two minute commercials promoting an upcoming 'Beach Boys' concert in Tampa. They played 'Beach Boys' record cuts before and after the commercials.

The FCC fined them for doing this and said the concert promoters had to pay not only for each 2 minute commercial, but also for the adjacent time the 'Beach Boys' music was played on each side of the commercials, about 8+ minutes worth, because, said the FCC, playing music by the same group being promoted made the music part of the commercial.
