That is strictly a choice of the broadcaster. If this were the primary service it is not likely it would be bit starved, and might even look better than a bit starved 1080i encoding.

So you wouldn't expect to see the ultimate quality anyway. I'm still wondering whether 704 X 480 at 60p can be sent at the same low bitrates that are now being used for 480 at 60i. And you would need to use 60i or 60p for sports, anyway.

480P will deliver BETTER image quality than 480i at the same bit rates. t would CLEARLY be better for sports than 480i.
