I personally don't think most of us would notice any difference on most
displays.  I've posted some pictures here before where I effectively
removed HALF the pixels and it was not very noticeable with proper
scaling.  Decreasing only the horizontal resolution by 15-16% would be
lost in the noise.

But I think 1280x720p is mostly the sweet spot for now anyway, 1080p
eventually in the future for most things.  And even higher once we all
get full wall flat panels.
