Not at all a "huge stretch," since the telco industry has been similarly
regulated for over 100 years. But that is indeed how it happened. The courts
had to nudge the FCC in the right direction, to do what they had wanted to do.
And how many trade scribes has misunderstood that, at the time?
Nice try, but the device makers are at the mercy of the content owners.
Yes, there will be competition at the device level, but the content
deals are often the real problem.
The only device makers "at the mercy of content owners," in truth, are those
device makers that beg to collude. The others are not. Device makers that
comply with the standards the content owners have adopted don't need to
collude. Just like OTA TV. You build an ATSC set, no need to collude. You want
to deviate from that for your own self-interests, expect problems, and expect
to have to pay the content owner to accommodate your special demands. Same
occurs online. Even limiting the resolution of analog RGB is not any form of
collusion. The content owners simply established that requirement for all PC
companies. Want to display HD? Okay, but for that you'll need a protected
digital display interface. Same rule applies to all. No collusion or
underhanded deals required.
But it is competition that you complain about endlessly. You tell us
that it is collusion if some device or Internet service does business
deals that are exclusive or restrictive. That is what competition is
all about.
Sorry, Craig, but your wordsmithing is unconvincing. A device maker that
restricts access to content is being anti-competitive, for his own personal
gain. But still, people can boycott that device, and buy something better. The
FCC does not need to micromanage this market, once Title II has become law.
The content is all in a handful of server farms,
There are already way, way more server farms than there are broadband pipes
available to your home, Craig. I use any number of these server farms, which
are well known, and yet only have access to two broadband providers (which can
credibly be used for daily streaming of TV). So as always, you seem to miss the
obvious. Competition is only inadequate for the broadband ISP, for reasons that
cannot easily be circumvented.
What do the content owners need the MVPDs for?
They do not. In the past, to get beyond what the OTA spectrum could carry, the
TV networks needed companies around the country to fuss with all that
labor-intensive effort needed to install and run cable systems. And the
resulting market distortions were **utterly predictable**. Now, the TV
networks, and anyone else, can instead use the neutral Internet. And they do,
both with their own web sites, and with various aggregation sites. I see no
hint that the content owners are converging on just one site, from which to
make all of their content available.
We're talking about the VMVPD Hulu slated for the end of this year
- live streams and VOD access to everything in today's MVPD bundles.
As I said, I see no indication that TV networks are converging on Hulu alone,
or any other such intention for monopoly. On the contrary, Yahoo View just
launched a few weeks ago, and HBO Now not long ago, proving the point. Many web
sites exist, and more should be expected, as we have been seeing.
You seem to perceive these other sites as only being promotional sites, but
that's just a long-term perception issue you have. I'm not limited to watching
clips and ads, Craig. And don't forget, you made similar comments wrt FOTA TV.
That didn't turn out as you predicted either.
What proprietary format Bert?
Apple uses industry standards, not proprietary formats.
Can AppleTV dispolay Yahoo View? No? Apple is busily colluding, trying to make
this happen.
Let me make it simple for Craig. Any time you require a special "app" for just
your brand and model of appliance, you're *not* using established standards. It
means you depend on collusion. Someone is asking for special favors, and
someone else is going to make sure to take advantage of this fact. What Craig
calls "just business."
Bert
