Nice!
As you can see, multiple standards are needed, and not all boxes can decode
all streams.
Yup. This paragraph was especially interesting:
File compatibility. If you’re interested in also playing music and movies you
have stored on your personal computer, you want your streaming media player to
be able to play your particular media. That means if you have an Apple-focused
library, you need a media player that plays back AAC and H.264 files. If you
have a Windows-focused library, you need a media player that plays back WMA and
WMV files. Not all streaming media players can play all formats, so peruse the
specs to find out for sure.
So Apple supports industry standards, while your PC is still trying to get you
to use proprietary Microsoft standards.
What I can tell you is that when a content owner wants to reach everyone, like
the subscription versions of Hulu, they use industry standards to reach the
connected TV boxes. Go figure.
These little boxes could care less about "the very vast majority of
what exists on the Internet."
This is Craig again, explaining to us what the special interests want us to
do. You are free to say "aye aye," Craig.
No Bert, they are connected TV devices designed to access streaming video
services that offer TV content. They are not PCs with generic web browsers.
Many of these little boxes DO offer Apps for popular sites like You Tube and
Vimeo, that go beyond TV entertainment, but that's primarily because these
services WANT to be on these boxes.
So the answer is no. Thank you Craig.
No the answer is "it depends." If a site is locked into a proprietary legacy
technology like Flash I'm SOL. If it is using industry standards, no problem.
That was the point I was making. The very vast majority of what's out there
on the Internet is not available with the little streaming boxes. It requires
special favors to make it available.
The very vast majority of what's out there on the Internet is not of interest
for the big screen in the family room. This may change as the resolution and
image rendition on the big screens improves; that's why Apple offers Air Play
and there are multiple wireless options to place what is on an Android screen
onto the big TV.
The reality is that millions of people are accessing non-TV content on their
smartphones and tablets WHILE they are "watching" TV.
Maybe this is how Bert calculates his streaming stats. If someone is shopping
on Amazon while watching a live linear TV show he counts it as streaming...
;-)

Craig
