The problem is primarily the need for an antenna long enough to

Many Android phones use the earphone cables as the antenna;
Bingo! This is a non-problem, Craig. I bought a tiny little HD Radio receiver
at Best Buy years ago, about the size of a matchbox. Guess what? It works fine.
If I'm using the earphone, like you said, the lead is the antenna. In the car,
I connect it via a mini-phone cable to the car's aux audio input. I drape the
cable over the rearview mirror, and again, it works fine. What if I used
Bluetooth to connect to the audio system? Well, yeah, there would be a problem.
If all else fails, they can provide for connecting an external antenna. For
smartphones, the CE vendors could easily let the users decide whether to listen
to radio or not. For strong stations, the internal antenna could potentially be
good enough.
Obviously most cell phones include a chip that supports FM reception.
But this chip requires additional support to be functional. Adding
HD radio support is an option available to any cell phone
manufacturer.
Thank you. So, it is possible. And in the future, or even now, analog FM should
not be essential, if you have HD Radio.
Even if its just a few cents, that's just one aspect of the cost.
Of course. So, go ahead and add those few cents to the retail price. We went
through exactly this same conversation in early ATSC days. I said, back then,
that this high drama had no bearing on reality. The price of the receiver would
soon be so small, compared with the price of the TV set, that no one would care.
Yes, there are more than 2000 stations broadcasting HD Radio. Not
sure if there are 2000 people listening.
Anyone with an HD Radio is most likely listening, even if they might not be
aware that they are. My Sangean HD Radio tuner used to default to HD Radio, and
if tuned to the .1 subchannel. It would revert to analog only if the digital
went south. I just don't get the objections. (Couldn't read Doug's post,
though. His text didn't show up in the archived version I use.)
