Perhaps Bert will find this article informative as it relates to
the economics and regulatory barriers to overbuilding existing
cities with broadband. This article talks about some additional
barriers that cities and incumbents can erect for would be
competitors...
Except that wasn't the punchline. The regulations for installing fiber exist
for a reason, and apparently Google was trying to sidestep those regulations.
But even in spite of that, the article makes the point that it's simply an
expensive proposition, and Google underestimated the costs, and overestimated
their potential application of wireless.
So much like Verizon.
Craig assumes that just because the incumbents complain, automatically that
means that a newcomer won't succeed. Well, you would fully expect the
incumbents to complain. So what? Craig should read the words in the article,
and not insert his views, unless making it plain that he is (again) writing his
own editorial.
Bottom line: it cost more than they expected, wireless did not come to the
rescue as they thought it would, and customers did not flock to their doors.
