It is hard to make a good collective decision for CE as probably for any other industry. They had good ones and bad ones. NTSC probably a good one, Beta-VHS- bad one. DVD - good one. HDDVD - Blu Ray - bad one, ATSC not so good (COFDM) and took a long time, 3D also bad one for a simple reason: The content providers are not synchronized with hardware providers. Still not so many 3D Blu Ray titles. In case of hardware the development is in full motion for all brands and all of them are making 3D option cost very little and possibly 0 for new models. The content provider's will probably grudgingly follow. You only build 3D sets, so the market of 3D sets can't help but grow. My question is, how does the CE industry make these decisions? Honestly, I don't get it. When DTV started, the industry (and CEA) couldn't help but whine about installing ATSC receivers, and they dragged their feet for years before making a decently up to date STB available at all! It took a FCC order to finally stop the logjam. When IBOC digital radio started, it was like pulling teeth to get a decent stereo component tuner with IBOC. And it's still impossible to get HD radio factory installed in the very vast majority of cars. So what is it that makes the TV industry so intent on cramming 3D sets down our throats, whether we want them or not? I'm so hugely unsympathetic with any of this nonsense. It just makes them sound like they are all on the take. "Over the next few years, a greater percentage of large-screen TV sets will ship with the 3D feature," says Michelle Abraham, Research Director. "We expect 100% of all 40-inch and above DTV sets will eventually be 3D-enabled. This will not only cause shipments of 3D TV sets to increase, but will also grow the number of households worldwide with 3D TV sets." In-Stat's research also found that households with 3D TV sets will eclipse 300 million in 2015. In 2011 Europe will boast the most 3D TV unit shipments at just over 7 million. By 2015 Asia/Pacific will have the largest share of 3D TV unit shipments at 32%, according to the research.
