PPPoE is usually implemented as a separate logical interface that happens to use a ethernet device. The device itself is just used by it and, other than that, is not directly related to it at all.


ifconfig would simply show a separate entry for a device called pppoe or something like that. PPPoE uses the ethernet card as PPP uses a modem.
