I don’t believe anyone has documented Red –shouldered Hawks nesting in central
Oregon although we have long suspected it to be so. Young fledged birds have
been seen in late summer for years. Starting 20 years ago, they were seen in
the south part of Deschutes and are now found in all 3 local counties with some
predictability. For years I have believed they have nested annually around
Tumalo Reservoir but have no confirmation. Now the water level is perhaps
permanently dropped so it may be less likely to find them. Someone may correct
me, I often speak from my general impressions and don’t keep detailed notes.

Subject: [obol] White-tailed Kite/Red-shouldered Hawk Questions

Have White-tailed Kites been found breeding north of Polk and Yamhill Counties
in the valley yet?

How about Red-shouldered Hawks- have they been found breeding in Benton County?
How about north of there? On the coast I think Red-shouldereds breed as far
north as Tillamook now- any records in Clatsop yet?

Thanks for updates!
