We went to Jean’s Park, which is on the west side of Fern Ridge, just around
the bend from Zumwalt Park. One can generally find mixed flocks in the wooded
parts of these parks at the right seasons, and we did this morning. Most of
the arboreal species in our list were included in one or two large flocks,
dominated by Black-throated Gray Warblers.

Wild Turkey - always a group around the residences of the area.
Pied-billed Grebe - 1
Western Grebe - many scattered on the lake
Clark’s Grebe - heard more often than westerns.
Eurasian Collared Dove - 2
Hummingbird species - 1
Gull species - scattered few over and on the lake
Great Egret 1 seen on route
Turkey Vulture - 4
Red-shouldered Hawk - 1 heard from end of the road that continues northward
(Regali).
Belted Kingfisher - 1
Red-breasted Sapsucker - 3 plus two at the end of the road.
Downy Woodpecker - 1
Northern Flicker - 3
Pileated Woodpecker - 2
Western Wood-Pewee - 1
Hutton’s Vireo - 2
Warbling Vireo - 4
Steller’s Jay - few
California Scrub-Jay - 8
American Crow - several
Violet-green Swallow - few flying high
Black-capped Chickadee - major component of mixed flocks
Chestnut-backed Chickadee - few seen low by lake edge
Bushtit - 2 or 3 flocks
Red-breasted Nuthatch - 2
Brown Creeper 4
Bewick’s Wren 1
Cedar Waxwing - an active flock catching insects, so scattered more than they
would be if berry-picking
Spotted Towhee 6
Song Sparrow 5
Red-winged Blackbird 28

Yellow Warbler - at least 2
Black-throated Gray Warbler - dominant species in mixed flocks
Wilson’s Warbler - 3 or more
Western Tanager - not sure how many as they moved around a lot. 4 or 5.
