Walked the dikes between ponds southward from the Royal lookout, and back by Redhead Pond. Some of us stopped by the Royal oak grove on way out. Canada Goose - nesting of course Cackling Goose - a flock of about 20 and a few stragglers. American Wigeon - some Mallard - some Gadwall - very many Northern Pintail - more noticed than mallards Green-Winged Teal - a few (one caught, killed, and eaten (?) by male Harrier) Northern Shoveler - numerous Cinnamon Teal - more than expected. Lesser Scaup - 6+ Ring-necked Duck - 12 Redhead - maybe 20 Ruddy Duck - scattered somewhat but maybe 20 Pied-billed Grebe - here and there Eared Grebe - 6 White Pelican - 11 Great Blue Heron - 8+ Virginia Rail - more than met the eye Sora - several heard and one seen American Coot - clusters, but not abundant Turkey Vulture - 6 Osprey - 1 Bald Eagle - 10 mostly immatures Northern Harrier - 3 (I had never seen a Harrier fly so fast: male captured a Green-w Teal, tried to hold it down while "dressing" it.)* Avocet - 2 Black-necked Stilt - 6 Greater Yellowlegs - several Lesser Yellowlegs - 2 Solitary Sandpiper - 1 Western Sandpiper - 12+ Least Sandpiper - Fairly numerous in several bunches Dunlin - Only individuals Long-billed Dowitcher - 100+ in one flock, but there were probably many more flocks. Wilson’s Snipe - 1 Wilson's Phalarope - 2 Ring-billed Gull - 4 Black Tern - 1 Rock Pigeon - 1 Vaux’s Swift - 5 Acorn Woodpecker - Several in the oak grove Northern Flicker - 1 in town Western Kingbird - 3 Tree Swallow - most numerous swallow Violet-green Swallow - present Cliff Swallow - 3 Barn Swallow - several Purple Martin - several Common Raven - 5 Western Scrub-Jay - present White-breasted Nuthatch - 2 heard Marsh Wren - everywhere American Robin - several European Starling - few Orange-crowned Warbler - 1 Yellow-rumped Warbler - many around the oak grove Black-throated Gray Warbler - 1 Common Yellowthroat - 3+ Spotted Towhee - 4 Song Sparrow - 10 Golden-crowned Sparrow - in small flock of sparrows White-crowned Sparrow - in small flock of sparrows Red-winged Blackbird - scattered Yellow-headed Blackbird - 2 Western Meadowlark - 3 Brewer's Blackbird - several Brown-headed Cowbird - 4 Bullock’s Oriole - 1 heard (Id not unanimous) Purple Finch - 2 House Finch - 1 Evening Grosbeak - at Dennis's American Goldfinch - 4 House Sparrow - around buildings Dick Lamster, Bruce Campbell, Fred Chancey, Don Schrouder, Sylvia Maulding, Dave Brown, Kit Larsen, Jim Ott, Dennis Arendt, Dave and Sally Hill, Jim Regali, and Larry McQueen.
