*SAS Minto-Brown Island Park Bird Walk Report*
*September 5, 2018*
This morning, Fred, Kay and I led the SAS Minto-Brown Island Park bird
walk. We were joined by 11 other birders. It was a very nice morning with
clear skies and temperatures ranging from 52 degrees to 69 degrees. We
walked about 3.1 miles as we covered the west end of the park including
near Eola Bend Park. The bird activity was slow with little bird activity
at times but there were a few spots with nice flocks of birds. We observed
(saw or heard) 36 species.
The highlights were as follows:
· We saw a *Pileated Woodpecker* on the large snag along the oxbow
near the main bridge. We also saw several *Downy Woodpeckers* and *Northern
Flickers*;
· There was a pair of *Wilson’s Warblers* in the bushes back by the
compost area towards Eola Bend Park. We also observed a few *Common
Yellowthroats*;
· Sparrows were the bird of the day as far as total numbers observed
but we only saw four species of sparrows. They included Dark-eyed Junco
(2), White-crowned Sparrow (20), Song Sparrow (23) and Spotted Towhee (3);
· We saw five (5) raptors including *Turkey Vultures *(5), *Red-tailed
Hawks *(2), *Osprey *(1), *American Kestrel *(3) and an unidentified
accipter;
· We saw 10 *California Quail* along the trail next to the river;
· Along the river we saw two *Spotted Sandpipers*, *Mallards*, two *Great
Blue Herons*, *Cedar Waxwings* as well as the above-mentioned *Osprey*; and
· Other observations included two *Swainson’s Thrush, *a* Rufous
Hummingbird *chasing off an* Anna’s Hummingbird *and two *White-breasted
Nuthatches*.
The next field trip is the *Ankeny NWR field trip* on *Saturday, September
15th at 7:00 AM.* *Meet at the Pintail Marsh parking lot off Wintel Road.*
The next *SAS Shorts* bird walk is at Cascades Gateway Park on *Monday,
September 24th at 9:00 AM.* Meet in the parking lot. Please join us if

*Note:* We have an *Owls of the Pacific Northwest workshop* on *Saturday,
October 6th from 10:00 AM to 12 noon*. The workshop is held at the ODFW
Classroom located at 4034 Fairview Industrial Dr. SE in Salem. The cost is
only $10 per person.
