I concur with Joel. Don’t just post your original photos, they are often huge
files. I live in a corner of Eugene that has poor connectivity so even in
urban areas this can be an issue. As a rule try to keep posts under a megabyte.

There is open-source software that lets you do this easily (for example,
the GNU Image Manipulation Program), as well as various commercial
software. Most photos that start out as 4 Mb can be downscaled by a
factor of 4 in resolution, bringing the file size down to 250 kb or so,
with no significant loss of detail. In the rare cases where details are
significant, please consider cropping the photo.
