Birders, Jack Anderson and I went to Newport yesterday to look for the Plovers
reported by many observers. We found them with the kind assistance of local
birders Peter and Kathy. ?last name. The plovers were about 100 yd. north of
the beach trail from the South Beach parking lot along the wrack line. We must
have walked by them once, but on the return trip we asked Peter if had seen any
small birds. He told us they were only a few feet away, and they were, all
hunkered down in small depressions perfectly camoflouged including the Mountain
Plover. They all flattened out when a Raven flew over. This was a great lesson
in protective plumage and the kindness of Birders helping other Birders.
Thanks, Peter and Kathy. Bob Bender, Eugene
