My satellite internet access is limited by monthly bandwidth usage, so I appreciate efforts to keep photo file sizes small. Also, to avoid repeating the same photo I try to remember to delete the photo in any replies I post. Btw, IRFanView (free at http://www.irfanview.com/) has an easy feature labeled "Save for web" that quickly reduces my 3-6mb photos to around 200-300K without noticeable loss of detail. Cropping helps a lot, too; for IRFanView there is a plug-in (addon) to make lossless crops to jpg files.

Hi all,

As one of those "slow rural DSL line" people, I'd like to request a
limit on photo *size* as well as the number of photos per posting.

I already know that my internet connection gets bogged down for several
minutes anytime that someone sends me a few 4 megabyte photos for field
purposes. While I'm happy to put up with that inconvenience to help
folks who really are looking for help on ID, it could rapidly get
overwhelming if other birders just want to "share" photo documentation
of birds that they've seen.

One way to make life less miserable for us slow-DSL folks is for
photographers to PLEASE DOWNSCALE YOUR PHOTOS BEFORE YOU POST THEM!

There is open-source software that lets you do this easily (for example,
the GNU Image Manipulation Program), as well as various commercial
software. Most photos that start out as 4 Mb can be downscaled by a
factor of 4 in resolution, bringing the file size down to 250 kb or so,
with no significant loss of detail. In the rare cases where details are
significant, please consider cropping the photo.

Thanks for your consideration,
Joel
