Recently passed though Connecticut as well on 84 - Waterbury is the epicenter
of some pretty miserable backups due to some construction. Avoid if possible.

We also drove to Maine a few weeks ago. Went on a Friday, leaving home at
9:00 am, and the biggest backups were in CT - on 84. We took the Tappan Zee
and had no trouble there (or in Delaware).

Hi Kathy -
I just returned from a round-trip to Rhode Island -- a trip we make fairly
often.
On the way up, on a Weds., we sailed through the Delaware and GW bridges and
the Merritt Pkwy, but then endured stop-and-go traffic for the last hour or so
of CT. (Quite odd, since the problems are usually in the southern half. We left
around 9:00, got to the GW around 1:00.
Today (Friday) I returned and noted that northbound traffic was murder, from
Maryland on up. LOTS of vehicles plus roadwork here and there.
Southbound had a few slowdowns, but traffic was much lighter.
Agree on Merritt Pkwy - it's dicey - but infinitely more pleasant than 95 (even
when moving slowly).
So leaving early is good -- but not traveling on a Friday is even better, if
they can do it.
All the workarounds you are suggesting may help, but they're longer and can
also have back-ups.
My feeling is: take the direct route, leave as early as possible, and hopefully
not on Friday!!

Laura - that’s true about Merritt Pkwy - sometime it’s better, sometimes it’s
not!

Ya totally depends on current traffic conditions. 95 in Connecticut can be
avoided by taking the pretty Merritt Parkway.

Hi all - we recently did this trip. Left east silver spring 9 Am and got to
mystic CT by 5:15 pm. Honestly Delaware nor NY were the main issues - 95 in CT
was. I agree with leaving early (and not on Friday is you can)

Your only hope is to go early to avoid the traffic

Family members are driving to Connecticut, then Maine, soon with a two-year-old
on board and would like to avoid as many traffic backups as possible. Brad
recently drove to Hartford on a Friday afternoon and encountered a significant
backup before the Delaware Memorial Bridge.
Is the Delaware Bridge issue ongoing, even on weekends? If so, is there any way
to avoid the backup?
Any thoughts on taking I-895 before BWI? We've done it and preferred it to
staying on 95, but Waze seems to prefer 95.
We are advising them to cross the Hudson on the Tappan Zee Bridge and then take
the Saw Mill River Parkway to I-84. Or to take the longer and less curvy I-684
to I-84. Or to tay on 287 to 15 to I-91 to 84.
All advice is welcome--
