Subject: NASAexplores This Week

This week on NASAexplores we're featuring the articles, "Keeping In Close
Contact," on how NASA is improving the accuracy and precision of air
travel,  "When Cool Is Essential," on a new cooling technology designed by
NASA, and "Microscopic Astronauts," on microbes.  Below are abstracts of the
articles, as well as brief descriptions of the accompanying lessons for each
grade level.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns
="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

To access the articles and lessons, please visit the NASAexplores web site:

Topic 1: Keeping In Close Contact

Where's that airplane up in the sky? The sky's a pretty big place; can you
pinpoint exactly where the plane is, and can you give the coordinates so that
someone else can find its precise location-while it's moving?   NASA has
developed technology so that civil and commercial navigation services can be
more accurately mapped. The extended benefits of this include aviation safety,
marine operations, land management, transportation, agriculture, and disaster
rescue projects, as well as accident avoidance systems.

K-4
Lesson 1 - Paper Doll Travelers:  To find lines of latitude and longitude on a
map.

Lesson 2 - Navigating Through Coordinates:  To learn to graph ordered pairs.

5-8
Lesson 1 - Where Am I?  To learn how a global positioning system (GPS) works,
and to use GPS information to determine location on a graph.

Lesson 2 - Learn Your Latitude:  To build a quadrant and use it to find the
user's latitude.

9-12
Lesson 1 - Save Me A Seat:  To visualize the amount of usable farmland in the
world.

Lesson 2 - Plotting Flight Patterns:  To determine a plane's flight pattern
based on pieced information.

Topic 2: When Cool Is Essential
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disease of the central nervous system caused by a
loss of myelin, which coats nerve cells. Years ago, it was discovered that body
cooling can temporarily restore nerve function in MS patients. A pump developed
by NASA has been helpful to patients who want to feel longer lasting results.

K-4
Lesson 1 - The Multiple Sclerosis Maze:  To learn about the disease multiple
sclerosis (MS).

Lesson 2 - Gadgets And Tools:  To learn how tools make life easier.

5-8
Lesson 1 - Know Your Neurons:  To learn about the structure of neurons, and to
create a model of a neuron.

Lesson 2 - Learning More About Multiple Sclerosis:  To use the Internet to
learn about Multiple Sclerosis.

9-12
Lesson 1 - Multiple Matching Sclerosis:  To learn more about the nervous system
of the human body by using vocabulary matching.

Lesson 2 - Cold Finger, Hot Finger:  To test the students' perception of hot
and cold.

Topic 3: Microscopic Astronauts
When astronauts travel into space, they carry trillions of microbes with them.
Since these tiny lifeforms are an important part of human life, NASA is working
to find out how microgravity affects them. The answers will not only help us
better understand microbes, but will have benefits for humans, as well.

K-4
Lesson 1 - A Bag Of Tasty Microbes:  To observe yeast growth.

Lesson 2 - Trillions Of Microbes:  To learn to read and write large numbers.

5-8
Lesson 1 - Comparing Viruses And Bacteria:  To learn how viruses differ from
bacteria.

Lesson 2 - Moldy Mayhem:  To observe and measure mold growth on different types
of bread.

9-12
Lesson 1 - Yeast Food:  To determine the proper conditions for yeast to feed
and grow.

Lesson 2 - Biology Books About Bacteria:  To learn more about three specific
types of bacteria.
