Posters from the George F. Tyler WWI Collection

"This exhibition presents selections from a collection of over 1,500 World
War I posters currently housed in Temple University Libraries' Special
Collections. It was donated to Temple University by George F. Tyler in
1937. The posters provide a graphic portrayal of Allied propaganda used to
educate the public and enlist support for the war effort. In addition,
they serve as examples of the art, design, and printing techniques of the
period. The selections are accompanied by primary source material and
commentary intended to provide additional context, insight, and
interpretation.

The Tyler collection was digitized as part of congressionally-directed
grants administered by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. It
can be viewed in its entirety as part of Temple University Libraries'
Digital Diamond Image Archive.  Fred Spear, 1915."

To use Digital Diamond, which also provides access from the former evening
newspaper in Philadelphia, the Philadelphia Bulletin, which is a
tremendous resource for Philadelphia history in pictures, go to this
website.

"The word diamond abounds at Temple Universitya constant reminder of
founder Russell Conwells stirring speech to prospective donors, retelling
the tale of acres of undiscovered diamonds that a prosperous Persian
farmer overlooked on his own land.

Temple Libraries recently launched Digital Diamond, an archive containing
thousands of digitized images, including historical photographs of
Philadelphia and the region, international war posters (one of which
appears on this issues cover), sheet music, architectural slides and
photographs, and other archival materials."

"Digital Diamond is an implementation of the Archival Reference Database
component of Temples online library system by Innovative Interfaces and
runs parallel to the online catalog. All search features found in the
online catalog are available, including keyword and advanced searching,
subject searching, and scoped searches.

Unlike a typical library catalog, with archival holdings represented by a
single summary statement describing an entire collection, Digital Diamond
features a complete MARC record for each image. Scholars who have
identified useful LC subject headings while searching for materials in the
online catalog can use the same headings to search in Digital Diamond for
related images of interest."

"Temple Urban Archives is a banquet of images."

They may crush you, console you, amaze or annoy, but love or hate them,
photographs aren't meant to be destroyed.

That's why, down a dull flight of stairs, through an easy-to-miss office
door, on the ground floor of Temple University's Samuel Paley Library, a
small staff maintains the more than five million images that comprise the
Temple Urban Archives' photojournalism collection. It's a photo album of
the Philadelphia metropolitan area dating back nearly two centuries, and
it's open to the public.

At first glance, the Urban Archives looks like your typical library
stacks. Drab, stiff, silent. But in this department, all a visitor has to
do is complete a simple registration form. Describe specifically what
you're looking for, including names and dates if possible, and one of the
three archivists will try to retrieve it.

"It's like a meal," said archivist and department head Margaret J.
Jerrido. "You order from the menu and we serve the food."

The Urban Archives' team gleans photographs for film production companies
looking to mimic fashions and scenery for period pieces, and assists with
academic research. Popular topics include women's rights, the Great
Depression and racial and ethnic controversies. The archives also help
individuals explore their family trees and neighborhoods. While the staff
can only devote a limited amount of time -- about 20 minutes -- to each
request, the team is adept at treasure hunting.

The Urban Archives includes more than 90 photographic collections, the
largest being the George D. McDowell Philadelphia Evening Bulletin
Collection. When the Bulletin retired its presses in 1982, Temple
negotiated to have the paper's entire body of clips and photos, dating
back to the 1920s, as well as the newsroom's complete library system,
relocated to the university's archives. The Urban Archives also includes
negatives from The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Digital Diamond is listed in the ARLIS Visual Resources Division
RESOURCES / Members' Online Image Catalogs, Databases and Research Sites
<http://www.chatham.edu/users/staff/dnolting/images.html>

So by the way is quite an array of other very interesting visual resource
collection search tools and resource listings.  ARLIS is the Art Libraries
Society of North America.

Digital Diamond is also listed in this directory:

American Women's History: A Research Guide

--------------------------------------------------------------

One interesting highlight for this collection is that the collection was
listed in a UNESCO directory well over six months before the database of
photographic images, Digital Diamond, was officially announced and
publicized.
