Subject: NASAexplores This Week

This week on NASAexplores we're featuring the articles, "Journey To The
Orbit Of The Earth," on the new Jules Verne spacecraft, and  "One Small
Step--Onto Earth," on the effects of gravity.  Below are abstracts of the
articles, as well as brief descriptions of the accompanying lessons for each
grade level.

To access the articles and lessons, please visit the NASAexplores web site:

Topic 1: Journey To The Orbit Of The Earth

Currently, a group of American and Russian spacecraft are responsible for
supporting the International Space Station.  Soon, though, that fleet will
be joined by a brand new unmanned supply spacecraft created by the European
Space Agency.

K-4
Lesson 1 - Estimate The Weight:  Estimate the weight of objects in ounces,
pounds, and tons.

Lesson 2 - Solar System--Fact Or Fiction?  To learn the difference between
fact and fiction, and to use the Internet to differentiate between the two.

5-8
Lesson 1 - Tons Of Mathematical Fun:  To use unit conversions to determine
the amount of cargo that can be shipped on the Jules Verne spacecraft.

Lesson 2 - Verne Predicts The Future:  To research which of the facts of a
work of fiction were similar to the actual facts of the first Moon landing.

9-12
Lesson 1 - Jules Verne And Progress:  To compare and contrast the Jules
Verne and Progress re-supply ships for the International Space Station
(ISS).

Lesson 2 - Is It New Or Just Not True?:  To read about a new scientific
discovery or innovation, and  to write a press release about it.

Topic 2: One Small Step--Onto Earth

When members of the Expedition 6 International Space Station crew returned
to Earth, they weren't expecting to perform an experiment about landing on
Mars.  But due to an unanticipated problem during re-entry, that's just what
they did.

K-4
Lesson 1 - Can You Guess My Weight?  To use the Internet to determine one's
weight on different planetary bodies, and to use the data to make a bar
graph.

Lesson 2 - Snakes!  To learn about snakes.

5-8
Lesson 1 - What's Your Weight?  To calculate one's weight on different
planetary bodies in our solar system, and to place the data into a bar
graph.

Lesson 2 - Going To Mars!  To use the Internet to research current missions
to Mars, and to report the findings to the class.

9-12
Lesson 1 - More Than One Way To Accelerate Gravity:  To calculate the
acceleration of gravity for various planets and compare them to the Earth.

Lesson 2 - Designing Space Exploration:  To design an experiment to test the
abilities of the first human crew to visit Mars or other planets/satellites.
