I have a Brother HL-4040CN and have had no problems printing with Ubuntu
(multiple versions) other than when using Firefox and not wanting to
print color it does anyway. But I have had issues doing that with other
OS's and Firefox also.

graphics engines, Brother's approach is not unreasonable and Mike
Bell has promised to teach me how to do it myself!
