I have had pretty good luck with Brother printers, but it depends on
your expectation.
I've had better luck with standalone printers, rather than MFPs,
although I have gotten one of those to work.
I would agree that with the fragmentation of the Linux space, compared
with proprietary environments, means that the lowest common denominator
(a shell) is the easiest to provide consistent documentation.
I have a Brother HL-2270DW, an entry-level monochrome laser printer with
a duplexer, and both wired and wireless networking. It's connected via
a wired connection to my network, but it was a snap, after installing
the drivers via the directions. The only catch is that I knew (from
past experience) that I would need the actual driver as well as the cups
wrapper package to make everything work properly.
Thanks,
Rob

I have a Brother HL-4040CN and have had no problems printing with Ubuntu
(multiple versions) other than when using Firefox and not wanting to
print color it does anyway. But I have had issues doing that with other
OS's and Firefox also.

to work under Linux. I've tried and tried and just can't get it to go.
The ONLY linux system I was able to get to print to it was a Linux
Mint box and only then until it patched.
So hate printers.

First, when the old HP conked out from old age, I could not get

Bought an HP 401dne for about $200 but could not get it to work
except when Mike was on the premises. The minute his truck hit
the street it did funny things like eating a half a ream ream of
paper with one liners and/or garbage.
On recommendation from an Ubuntu author I bought a Brother
HL-L2320D for $59.99 at Office Max. It would not install in KDE
but within a day I had instructions from Brother that did the job
by going into Command Line mode.
In the meantime I received a reply for the same Ubuntu author
stating that due to the many different distributions and different
graphics engines, Brother's approach is not unreasonable and Mike
Bell has promised to teach me how to do it myself!
BTW, email me if you want a copy of those instructions.
