Guess who’s cute as a button and has all pink skin now! Mr Frodo! Yes there is some medium and dark pink spots but there aren’t any red or open sores. I put SDD on the dark pink spots that were sores yesterday and A&d on the rest. Then put a diaper on a tiny bit side ways to cover that upper leg and keep it from rubbing off until it’s absorbed in good. I hope it doesn’t get into the nearby fur too badly and cause Matts?
I’ll be using only A&D (or butt paste ) starting tomorrow to keep him healing and dry. I just have to make sure I use warm wet cotton balls to clean his skin and dry with toilet paper before putting on the a&d or butt paste? I don’t want to seal in any germs or  infection which is why I’ve been using SDD until sores are gone. Vet wants me to switch to cornstarch on the skin but i had been doing that this past month and it didn’t prevent this scalding. and if his skin starts to get irritated again from urine or laying in the same spot all the time, I have to shampoo the cornstarch off before I can put ointment on.
Thanks everyone. Frodo still has all his other problems, but he should be much more comfortable now.

It’s looking much better to me Brenda. If all is healed up I  would maintain it with either the  butte paste my rescue friend told me about in the yellow box, or I personally would just use A and D to keep it protected without antibacterial or antibiotics in it….. Honestly, you will have to decide, but both are good options. I only have used the Aand D…a lot of things I’ve used because of no vets I had to ask others who had experience with the situation and then weigh the pros and cons. Ans when rehabbing hares, there were literally no vets who knew poop about rabbits or hares….I had to research library,,even research on antibiotics that were tested on rabbits and other meds to find safe choices,
Whatever you do, it looks like he’s much better, thank God.  I will definitely continue to pray for Frodo. I believe that works too.

Is the consensus that I wait until all the sores are healed (no broken skin) before i switch from SDD silver sulfa.. to A&D ointment (or Butt Paste if that doesn’t stay on or help)?  My vet just gave me the SDD and said twice and day and keep it dry or else. I emailed the holistic vet and she said in between the SDD applications I could use the wound balm i alread ly have — which has beeswax, olive oil, yarrow, burdock root, echinacea root ( because it’s anti-microbial, an immune system stimulant, and anti-inflammatory). But I think the A&D would be better because it’s harder to wipe off.
Here is this mornings photo with and without flash. The blanket is white and my hands aren’t red, they are more like the color in the flash photo, so I think the flash photo is more accurate. I don’t remember him being  red when Jim was taking the photo! Medium to dark pink with a few red spots.
Anyway he has some broken skin to the right near his tail and we need to shave/clip that area and the perimeter of the bald area because it’s trying to Matt in a few places and probably holds dampness. I charged up my ladies shaver/groomer and have 2 heads I can try that have guards. If that doesn’t work I need a men’s barber clipper. I wish I could have had the vets staff do it. I go again this week for his checkup so they can pretty it up for me
During the night he had a weird scanning move he was doing, even in his sleep i think. He would be still and then twitch his head and scan (move head to the right) a little and then go back. After several seconds it would repeat. I put him on my lap and massaged him and it seemed to go away. He loved the massage anyway. I don’t think he’s doing it this morning.  He did escape his diaper in the middle of night but wasn’t wet and didn’t slide around In poop. I got another diaper on and that stayed on til morning. So success!
You all are good sports to keep reading my lengthy posts and looking at the unpleasant photos. I can’t go in with Frodo for his appointments, the vet calls us and tells us what she thought of his exam, and she is so busy she doesn’t have much time to talk. So I feel like I’m on my own to figure out the finer details
With love , Brenda and Frodo

Brenda,

It is so good to hear that Frodo had a good day today...I pray there will be more and more of those.
I can't advise you on low gas and low calcium greens, and hope someone else can.

He’s having a good day today.  Yesterday he was doing a lot of scanning and wasn’t very chipper at all.   I don’t know that the dizziness is any better - he seems fine when he’s sitting still but when we set him on his feet he runs in circles for a few seconds or a minute until he falls over and you can see that his eyes are moving left to right. Well, he runs in circles If his back legs are working that day. I’ve been putting him in a harness to help balance him so he can get a few Minutes of walking and exercise each day. He was able to walk around 3 weeks if I set him on his feet, but hes been declining since then. But today he is pretty peppy. Maybe he hasn’t been eating much for a week because his skin hurts. He’d eat the whole store’s worth of parsley if I let him.
Speaking of … you guys know off hand low gas low calcium greens? I need to watch him because he got a bladder stone last year. And he’s prone to gas. Although the vets day bladder sludge/stones is more about hydration and exercise than diet. So I have to jiggle his bladder every day to stir anything in there up so they come out.  I’m now feeding him dandelion greens and cilantro and parsley.  I actually had to stop giving him greens a couple years ago except as a treat because the more I gave him the more often he’d get GI stasis. When I stopped the greens he stopped getting stasis every week. And Balin usually refuses greens anyway. I have weird bunnies for sure. But since Frodos appetite is so low now and he won’t drink, I’m giving him wet greens several times a day and sub q fluids daily. He’s on gut motility drugs anyway so what the heck.  Vet said up to 2 cups of greens a day. Some days we go over that just to get him to eat something. He can’t believe his good fortune as far as the greens go. As you can tell from the video.

Frodo was super happy to sit propped up on the couch and get some fresh parsley. He nearly jumped at me to get it!
Thought you all could use some cuteness.  Thanks for all your support and advice.

The area looks more pink, and not red, Brenda.  You are doing a good job.  I am sorry the butt bath was an ordeal, and just want to mention that I held Riley on a football hold on his back and let the tepid water only run on the necessary area to be cleaned.  I just mentioned it in case you have a mess to clean that is difficult to do with wipes.

He remains in my prayers.  Keep us posted.

Here’s pic of his situation this morning.
You can see at the bottom of the photo near his foot where the fur was wet. I don’t know if the diaper wasn’t on right or is too big or if it was when he started peeing as I was taking it off. At least it was a different area and the skin seemed okay
It’s better overall, you can’t see but I see a couple small (like smaller than a pencil eraser) spots that are red and where the scabs or whatever came off with the washcloth on Wednesday (I thought it was cornstarch clumps but guess not).   Also there is redness in the fur line along the perimeter of the bald area. I put SDD ointment on but need to trim the fur there somehow, comb it, clean it and more ointment later. Maybe my brand new little eyebrow battery operated shaver would trim it. I d on’t want to do a whole butt bath that was such an ordeal and I think made it worse and was so hard to get the fur dry. and he’s not got poop in it since I started  diapers at night.

I’ve only been using the SDD so far until the redness is gone. Then I was doing to try Ad ointment no zinc formula.
His diaper fell off last night and when i checked on him kn the middle of the night he was wet. I was so upset! His fur was wet but the bedding wasn’t soaked so i don’t know how he got wet. So I took a towel and lightly pressed against the bare skin areas, blotted the fur that was wet, then rubbed some cornstarch into the wet fur and massaged it until it was fully dry. I hope it didn’t get stuck in any remaining SDD ointment that may have got rubbed into the fur. I didn’t feel like the fur was sticky so I’m hoping it’s all good. Then I put a new diaper on him and it’s still on. I slept in late I was so tired. Hoping he’s dry under his diaper. I’ll check it out soon and send a pic and update to everyone. .
