Hello all again,
I have received a few off-list messages after posting about the use of the
term "invalid pension" by the commonwealth bank on the Netbank website. As
I mentioned in my original post that I had responded to an email from the
bank stating I needed to update my Tax File number status, some of the list
members who contacted me were worried that the email from the bank was a
scam.
I do thank those who contacted me for their concern. I thought that I
should explain to everyone that this same thought had crossed my mind when
I received the first email from the bank, so I ignored it. But when I got
a reminder, I read it more closely and noted that there was no link or
button or attachment in the email, the tell-tell clues that it may have
been a scam email. The email just set out the notification and the
instructions, but I had to log-on to my Netbank account from the browser.
Also, I have a talking Netcode token, and the bank sends out a random
single-use code that I need to enter to confirm the log-in step. It would
be unlikely that the security system could be hacked, so it adds another
layer of assurance that I was logging-in to the real Netbank website, not a
"fishing" scam site.
But it is a fact that we all need to be cautious of emails that ask us to
update our personal details, etc.,
I do hope that everyone got a chuckle out of the bank's use of the "invalid
pension" terminology. Still, we owe it to those who fought for years to
get rid of such language, not to turn a blind eye (!) to its use today.
Cheers,

Hello all,
I am sharing this half-laughing, half shaking my head:
I just logged-on to the Netbank website to update my Tax File # status,
after receiving a reminder from the commonwealth Bank that I needed to do
this to avoid tax being taken from my account. I followed the prompts to
the combo box to select the type of exemption I had (for not having to
provide my TFN). Would you believe that the option for the DSP was called
"Invalid Pension"? Goodness, I don't think it has been called that since
circa 1991! Whoever at the CBA used this term should get a slap on the hand
and made to watch the documentary "Defiant lives", which includes a clip
discussing the demeaning connotation of this label! I am not a stickler
for PC, but that one really is so last century!
Cheers,
