From Gerhard's experiences with Time Capsule, I would suspect that's your problem. Time Machine and its editors are usually problem-free. 1.5Tb USB drives are $69 now.

Your backup hard drive is full. If you want to erase and start over, why not use disc utility? It will erase any drive in minutes.
