Thank you, Gerhard. As you said, I was "eventually" able to set up the option where the mobileme rep phoned me. We had an exchange of views, and I settled on the solution of waiting 8 hours for mobileme to reset my .apple ID and password. So I'll try again tomorrow. I had discovered that I could access my mobileme from the panel in System Preferences. I got the impression that the website www.me.com is really for iOS devices (iPod, iPhone and iPad). I did have some difficulty hearing and understanding the rep but think she said that I wasn't missing anything by not going the me.com route.
