Having just had my office Dell desktop repaired under warranty for system
freezes, I am currently in a "suspect the hardware" frame of mind.

In my PC's case, it was faulty capacitors on the motherboard (apparently a
problem endemic to the GX270 model) and the problem was load dependent -
probably because the capacitors in question are very close to the CPU.

It is entirely possible that it is (for instance) bad RAM that is causing
your trouble. It could be that the faulty part of the RAM is in an area
that a lightly-loaded system won't tend to use. Without Office, your PC
probably doesn't get enough of a workout to expose such a problem.

It's certainly worthwhile finding an running a memory test program.

Although hardware is usually very reliable, the sudden onset of the problem
after months of reliability, plus the inability to do an install now that
will run cleanly, does raise hardware as a suspect to me.

However ... it's 10 months old and came with Office preinstalled? It's
Dell's problem. They can fix it under warranty. If you can't reinstall the
software they supplied, then it's their turn to try.

Regards, Dave S
