Hi Gene. That's one I've never seen before. The only thing I can think of
is this. Are you using the Preview Pane? If so, go to Tools>Options (in
your inbox...not inside a mail) and click on Other tab, then click on the
Preview Pane button and UNCHECK where it says to "mark messages as read in
preview window"

However, if that doesn't do it, try running Detect and Repair from Outlook's
Help menu

Good luck...let us know how you do.

As some of you know I was one of the first I think to try Office 2002,
Well with a problem I took it from my computer and went back to 2000,
WELL new computer for Christmas so back I come with Office 2002, and XP
Pro Great I have it updated to SP2 and the old problem went away and
everything works great EXCEPT in Outlook when the mail comes in some is
marked read that has not been read?? What do I have set wrong? Its like
it reads it or sets it read before it moves it to the folder ?? Is the
rule set wrong? Or?

And Linda The index part now works or seems to be OK. Thanks.

Gene
