Has anybody suggested making sure that you have enough memory to handle Outlook running such large files?? It might be worth shutting down every other programme that would otherwise be running to free up some memory and (indeed) increasing your memory to the point where you can at least get the programme open. Windows saying it's not responding is a way of telling you it's a memory-related issue to some extent (unless one of our gurus here says otherwise!) I would also endorse using personal folders rather than archive folders as this will enable you to keep things "named" the way you want them. One thing you could try would be to copy your Outlook.pst file to another location, then create a new profile for Outlook which will give you a completely empty set of files. This will enable you to see if the installation itself is ok and perhaps run a detect and repair. You can then try importing your original .pst file into the new profile. Detective work to whittle down the cause is always worthwhile IMHO. To state the obvious, run it on another machine you are going to need to write the file/s to a flash drive or a cd as it's going to be impossible to email it to anybody!
