[mso] Outlook 2000 not opening

Lately, when I attempt to start Outlook 2000, it goes to the splash
screen and immediately hangs / freezes. I have to do a C-A-D to end it.
I have tried the following:
System Restore, set back to eight weeks. (I am concerned to go back
further than that.)
Office Repair
Restore from backup.
All three to no avail.
I am willing to reinstall Outlook (but that kills the PST file, right? I
don't want to lose email), but can anyone tell me how to preserve the
email? They are largely research email, and some cannot be re-done.
I am worried that my email reached the max size file. Wasn't it about 2G
for Outlook 2000? If that is the case, is there a way to open it, and
print what I definitely want, and then delete it? After doing that, I
can go through trimming it with a mean streak and pare things down.
I would even be open to copying my PST file to another location, and use
a third party software to extract and save that to Access or Excel.
Suggestions? I really don't want to lose three years of research since
some of it cannot be reproduced.
