[mso] OT - Guestbook spam rant & warning

Hi folks and hope you don't Linda & Marv...but I just must pass this
along as a service to users.
If you have a guestbook on your web site, I suggest you check it and
keep watch. I wrote my own guestbook, so I have it set to send me an
email whenever someone adds a submission, but I'm guessing that the free
guestbook services some of you may use do not email you to let you know
that you have a new submission. Therefore, unless you check your
guestbooks, you may not know you have a new listing.
And lately, there's a new scam by these scumbucket spammers! They put
their spam in HTML code and post it to your guestbook as their own
hyperlink spam advertisements for their sites and promos.
I got one yesterday from some Istanbul travel garbage and thought it was
a fluke. But now today I got another from JohnFranks@xxxxxxxxx (surely a
BS address?) with a MONSTER POST for a drug site and it must have listed
every damn drug on the market. It was huge and ate up much of my page!
Luckily, thanks to the email, I was able to immediately pull down my
database, delete that entry and put the DB back on my site so the entry
was removed very quickly.
But if you don't know this stuff is out there, you may have some of this
<curse, curse, curse> spam posts in your guestbooks. So you'll want to
get in there, check and use the options on your services to delete that
particular guestbook entry.
I am just fuming about this and plan to write an article in next month's
TechTrax. I think it's time folks band together and post message to
these web sites and demand they stop. I just blasted the spam back to he
web site's "contact us" form and maybe if enough folks condemn these
site, a few might actually wake up that this is bad marketing!
