Well, it COULD be that due to the different keyboard structure that
you're using, there could be some different keystrokes and that combo
may somehow turn off formatting?

And NO, no question is dumb! So feel free to ask about anything you
don't understand.

What the line break does is add a return, but NOT end the Paragraph
marker. If you turn on the visual aids to see the underlying markers,
you'll might be able to understand it better.

Click Tools/Options/View and check ON the Paragraph Marker option.

Now type along the page and at some point hit the enter key. You'll see
a paragraph ENDING marker. Even if your "paragraph" is only one word
long when you hit enter. If you were applying a style, they are applied
to each PARAGRAPH, separately.

In fact, I just explained this same thing in my HTML lessons that will
be published in the September issue of TechTrax (which SHOULD be out any
time now...I'm running a day late due to the holiday!). But as I
explained in that lesson...say you had a bullet list and wanted to add
spacing between two paragraph, but not cause a new paragraph style to
add a new bullet marker to the new paragraph. That you want it to look
like just another indented paragraph in the same bullet style.

If you hit enter, it would end the bullet paragraph style and the next
paragraph style would start. If you had bullet after bullet...then the
next paragraph would have a bullet marker in front of it, too.

But if that's not what you want and you just want the spacing to be
inserted between the paragraphs and no bullet in the next paragraph, you
could get sneaking and use the line feed (Shift/Enter) to add the line,
but "continue" the same as it was in the previous paragraph. The marker
you would see then would be a bent arrow, like the marker that appears
on most return keys on US keyboards. Like a 90 degree angle with an
arrow at one end.

So you'd get the line feed, but it wouldn't stop the paragraph. You
usually have to use two line feeds to enter the space you need. And
since you can do the same type of continuation with HTML in
code...that's why I just wrote all that same info in my article. (see
www.mousetrax.com/techtrax/ in a few hours when the Sept issue is
online.

Hope that helps explain it!

But the weird thing is, when I'm using the school system, it does work
but of course the office is 2000 instead of XP which I have. It does
remove the formatting away and use the default format. I know the
hotkeys for bold, italics and so on but just find it weird when this
line break hotkey works in my school but not on my system. So at this
stage after so much clarifications, that line break will work in style
and not in format?? Or what does this line break does anyway? Visually
which I can't see well enough to determine...

Hope its not dump enough to ask though.

Ok, if I understand you correctly, you're saying that you apply
attributed to words such as bold, underline or italic and then you've
been told to hit Shift/Enter to stop the line from being bold,
underlines or italic?

If that's the case, I'd love to get a hold of the person who told you
that, because you've been not only wasting a lot of keystrokes, but
you've been applying poor formatting to all your documents!

To turn on attributes such as bold, you simply hit Ctrl/B to toggle ON
the bold attribute and start typing. Hit Ctrl/B again to toggle it off.
Or you can select the word(s) after it's been typed and THEN toggle on
the attributes to the selected text. You can use the shortcuts keys of
Ctrl/B for Bold, Ctrl/I for Italic and I believe Ctrl/U.

A better way is actually to create a character style to apply to the
words, but that might be a bit advanced for you at this point. But know
that you should RARELY use the Shift/Enter keystroke. There are reasons
to use it, but getting out of formatting is not one of them!=20

If this still wasn't what you meant, let me know and we'll roll again!

I will explain again.
Like example, if you got first line with bolded and underline, so to get
another line without bolded and underlined, you will need to hit line
break to get out of it which its shift - enter It work for office 2k but
not my version of office xp. You got what I mean?

Sorry, but I don't quite understand what it is that you're trying to
accomplish? Can you provide another view of what it is you're doing? If
you're talking about Styles, maybe this article will help:=20

Hi,

Is there any wrong or any setting need to be change in Word XP that if
you have a couple of format like bolded and underline on a sentence but
you want to start afresh on another new sentence, so in word 97 or 2000,
I'm taught to use shift - enter to have a line break but in word xp, its
not making any differents. I use line break often in my schoo running
Office 2k but at home, I got XP though. Even searching line break in the
help of word xp, comes to answer of hitting shift - enter.

Just find it weird to me.

Biggest question in my life, why is a building call a building when its
already built?
