Rob,

Could an option be placed such that a person can choose to have categories
which are the same and also involve both credits and debits tallied up in
the ctrl-b option dialog. For instance.
A credit/debit summary, ctrl-b might look like this:

Credits:

Ian)
       25.00 total
           1 item

Debits:

Ian
      107.00 total
           1 item

Credit Total: 25.00
Debit Total: 107.00
Net Total for Ian: -82.00

Then the report could move on to the next payee/payer name, only giving a
net total if the same category were used and that payee/payer had both
credits and debits associated with it.

The program wouldn't do a net total for the payee/payer unless the same
category item were used for both credits and debits to that person.

And this option could be allowed or disallowed through a checkbox item in
the preferences, or where ever you currently have that type of choice right
now, I can't recall.

Best,
Steve

Hi Rob, Well, I suppose that there's an argument for doing it either way. I
use MT for my personal accounts, but also to keep a basic track of income
and outgoings for a small charity. I should like to be able to take the
category summary info and use it in the preparation of the end-of-year
accounts for the charity. Would it be possible to have an option to select
how this info was processed?
Incidentally, I think that MT is probably the most useful programme I've had
in ages.
Thanks.

Richard:

Unfortunately, we don?t really consider this broken. Rather, we believe that
it is better to use different categories for debits and credits. In short,
all values in category calculations are considered to be positive as you
have discovered. This allows categories for debits to be positive. For
example, your medical expenses for 2009 should appear as $400, not -$400 in
the summaries. Is this the wrong way of looking at this?

following some valuable input from Steve, I'm writing to ask if
consideration could be given to fix a problem I have with MT. The problem
is that, if I have debits and credits in the same category, when I do a
category summary, the figures are just added - irrespective of whether they
are debits or credits. For example, if I spend £100 on electricity, and
then get a refund of £20, the electricity category shows £120 not £80.

I think that this would be a valuable feature, unless there's currently a
way of doing this which isn't too fiddly.

Thanks,

Richard
