Harry Hi,
The thread that you speak of could be 7/32" X 26 TPI which if its 55 drgree 
form its British standard brass(BSB) or if its 60 drgree form it may be Britich 
Standard Cycle(BSC formerly CEI)

as its 26 tpi you could go up to 6mm X 1mm (25.4TPI)Pitch which would be easier 
to get grub screwws for.
