I cheated!  I made a "screwed mandrel" out of it by
threading the excess that protruded beyond the hub and
installed a big nut on it and snugged it down.  I also
installed a bent tail lathe dog on the mandrel near
the 3 jaw chuck, so it won't turn in the chuch and get
"off".
