That's pretty much why I don't use mail with Exchange.

So at work this week we turned off Basic Auth for Exchange and moved to
Modern Auth. This is painless for Outlook users - they just get prompted to
re-auth, get a fancy new OAuth token, and away you go. iOS and Mail.app
clients though, have to completely delete the Exchange account and add it back
in, which means I now have to download all my mail again. My Exchange file is
30+GB at this point. Last time I had to rebuild my Mail.app Exchange account
it took over 24 hours while connected to the work wired network, and that was
probably a year ago or so. Now I’m stuck at home with 3Mbps DSL. The download
started yesterday evening and I bet will still be going on throughout the
weekend…
