Furlough means forced unpaid time off. You are still technically an employee
but you don’t work and you don’t get paid. Your employer may choose to continue
to provide some benefits for some period of the furlough. And when things get
better you can come back to your old job. So not as final as a layoff which is
when your position gets eliminated.
You generally get to claim unemployment benefits while furloughed as well.
