Larry,

I'm not much of a critic, but the biggest thing I'd have done with
this shot is try and get the bird when it was clear of the reflection
from the bank.  In my opinion, the brown bird against the "brown"
water takes away from the shot.  She would have appeared more dramatic
against a lighter background.

I denoised the red and green channels a little to clean up the dark
background above the bird, applied a 0.5 radius unsharp mask, and
adjusted the color curve to brighten it up a bit.  (I use Gimp on a
Linux machine for post processing.)

Here's my result -- not that it's any better than yours; just a little
different.
