You will have to have Snow Leopard or Lion installed before you can download
Mountain Lion.

good point as it was that same sinario that prompted me to upgrade ram last
time. I hope it works though as i don't want a new machine at this time.

The other thing is that the app store will not let you download the new cat if
your computer will not run it.
