No it should not. If I open let' say 1 or even 4 messages at a time in mail, my mail acts like it wants to freeze. it is between 1 and 2 seconds or maybe a bit more until I hear the changing window soundd. and even vo right arrowing is causing mail or finder to be busy in list mode.
