I would recommend this option to protect data from recovery. this should also 
be done when you create a new master account on the mac if sending out to 
someone, etc. to do this, run disk utility, select your drive, then go to 
erase. you then instruct the following. Erase free space. you can do a quick 
erase, which is a single pass 0 write, all the way to a 37x pass write but that 
takes days on the highest setting.

once done, your data is safe.
