OK to help you with this,

what you could do is this, as you're giving it as a gift, get the recipient's
details.
Name,
address,
post code,
phone number,
email.

You'll need to create a new apple ID for the user so ask your recipient for a
password he / she would like to use with the new apple ID. in this case, the
recipient's email address is a good starting point.

from there, once the apple ID is created through apple. link it to iTunes and
the app store. Now, if you're feeling generous, a £15 / $15 itunes card will
allow you to set your new owner up with mountain lion. and yes the 2008 mbp
will handle mountain lion without issues as proven on my 2007 macbook pro 3.1
machine. you don't need any CD's if you happen to have a spare USB pen drive.
you can create a USB build drive to restore the system and perform a clean
installation. on that pen drive you can include ilife and iwork, contact me
off list at edwardredfern@xxxxxxx and I'll assist you further on that.
