The Battle of the Somme 'began' at 7:30 am on July 1, 1916. Here on the
West Coast of North America, it hasn't began yet, but it's been going for
several hours now in historical space.
Reading about it may provoke some ideas about warlike youth, the kind of
youth who carry pugnacious genes, which they got over the millennia between
their life in caves and and the invention of boomerangs and siege engines.
I'm sure there's more, but thinking about young men who trusted their
commanders, to the death
only makes me think of the captive human spirit, which neither historians
or novelists can express in plain words.

I'm not sure what's meant to follow from this, but something might be.
